A Grasp On Inquiry

I have been having a hard time figuring out this whole "inquiry" thing but today in class I think I finally came up with a good controlling purpose that will help me a lot. I am planning on revising my essay to revolve around "what defines a 'medical use' of a drug and why the United States Government considers marijuana a Schedule I drug that has no medical purpose". I think this will help me create more connections between my sources and aim them all towards the same direction. A lot of my sources seem biased so I think it will be hard to conceal the authors' opinions and my own opinion inconspicuously within my paper. Because of my biased opinion I have a lot of information supporting just my opinion so not many of my sources challenge each other very much. After finally figuring out my controlling purpose I think I will have an easier time revising my paper for next Tuesday! :)

Research Question and Controlling Purpose

I finally chose a specific research question that I feel confident in. In assignment 6 I stated my research question as " In this essay I will be examining if legalizing medical marijuana in the United States would be justified and what effects it would bring upon today’s society." It is pretty self explanatory. From my previous post, it is obvious that I am in favor of the legalization of marijuana. I am using this research question to imply my controlling purpose of why medical marijuana should be legalized. I feel as though my research question and controlling purpose are working well together. By finding information about the positive effects that marijuana has on medical patients, I am able to support my opinion without actually stating it (academic inquiry). I think I finally have a good thing going here. :)

Marijuana Inc

10/12/09

Marijuana is a drug commonly used among Americans today despite the fact that the Federal Government bans any possession or use of the drug. Despite all of the efforts the government has made to keep this drug out of the United States and to punish people who grow and distribute it within the country it still seems to be a very easy thing to buy and possess. There is no way one can overdose on marijuana. It is a relaxant and often used as a medically administered drug for cancer, aids, anxiety and many other related cases. I feel that this drug causes unnecessary problems in our law enforcements. Money is spent on this ongoing search for marijuana in our country. By keeping marijuana out, drug lords in Mexico are sending it in causing violence and unnecessary deaths among innocent people. If it was legal in the United States the efforts of law enforcement and money would go elsewhere, where it is needed more. I feel that marijuana could help the economy. The profits of marijuana from the grower to the user are extreme! I feel that this is a subject that needs to be focused on more, especially in the rough times America is going through. I do not think I will make much of a difference but by telling and convincing more and more people my goal might eventually be achieved. My scholarly sources are limited but I will find as much information as I can to support my opinion and to educate myself on the subject.

This is the URL to YouTube about a really interesting show called Marijuana Inc. This is the first part out of 5.

Legalization of Marijuana

October 8th, 2009

For my research project I am writing about the legalization on marijuana in the United States. I am still not positive what exactly my subject will be narrowed down to but it will be along these lines. I feel that marijuana should be legalized in he United States. There are many reasons why this would help and better society in America and I plan to write about them and convince my readers of this. I think this is important to an audience who both believe marijuana should be legalized and people who do not know much about this subject. I do not think that my research will do much for legalization of marijuana but I feel that by educating my audience on this subject it will help spread the word. I am looking forward to educating my audience and myself on this subject.
